The Legend of Youngs Corner V

PART V
Second Sighting in the Winter

At the end of that year, during Maine’s heavy winter season, my family and I decided to trek through the Northern Woods and see if we could find the pond, Taylor Pond, that lay at the end of the forest. We suited up with much snow equipment, and in mid-afternoon started to travel across the great field separating my house from the forest. In less than an hour, we approached the forest. The tall, foreboding trees were made even more frightening by their sheer dark starkness. The bare trees were covered in white, as was the ground, which made for a perilous journey. Hidden burrows, fallen limbs, and rocks were a constant worry for our trip. We crossed a frozen creek which seemed to flow from the pond. After about an hour or so, the land’s elevation slowly began to rise to our left as we journeyed further. Soon, we could see through the fog that we were walking along side a large hill, stretching high as far as the eye could see, covered with leafless trees. As we stood to rest and to gaze up at the hill, it was then when we saw it. In the gray dimness of the winter sky, with a bleak white fog rolling through the dark trees above the snowy white ground, we could see at the top of the hill, 3, small, cabins.

All sound had stopped; our faces grew white with the cold and the fear. There they were! The cabins of the witch! Was she there now, looking at us through a window holding her shotgun? The thoughts ran through my head, filling it with terror. My brother and I slowly began to walk away from the cabins, which seemed to blend with the gray sky. They looked old and uninhabited, poor cabins from a forgotten age. Our parents noticed our fright and decided to continue the trek through the woods. It was the first sighting of the cabins for not just myself, but my whole family. My mother had heard the story over 20 years ago but had never ventured into the woods. Now I knew where they were, and it would take another 5 years to gain enough courage to go and find them again…
